SimCity Closed Beta and DirectX File Upload Tutorial
The SimCity Beta is here! However, when signing up I noticed a few things that needed some explaining when signing up for the Beta and uploading a dxdiag file properly.
Initially I planned on just turning this into a comment thread to help people get their files onto the closed Beta, but figured I’d make an explanation post instead. What happened was that I went through the process of signing up for Beta, and then I was asked to upload a dxdiag file. Nowhere do they explain what a dxdiag file is and how to obtain it on the site. Furthermore, even if you do everything right, you will still get an error if you do not change the name of the dxdiag file that you obtained. So, I created this quick walkthrough.
First of all, follow this link here to the closed Beta.
You must have an Origins account to set this up. So either you have to sign into your Origins account, or create a new one at this point.
Follow the first set of instructions, accepting the terms and whatnot.
Then fill out the small survey about what games you play, and your play times.
At the bottom of the survey it will ask you for a “dxdiag” file to upload. This is where things get confusing, for those of you who have no idea what even a dxdiag file is. In short, this is your DirectX Diagnostic Tool file that has all your computer’s information on it.
Step 1: Start > Run
If you cannot find Run on your computer, I found mine going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Run
Then type, dxdiag in the box that appears.
Step 2: After selecting OK, the DirectX Diagnostic Tool will load.
Step 3: Select “Save All Information”
You will find this as the bottom, center button.
You want to save it as a txt file type, NOT xml. If you save and upload as an xml, it will also result in an error on the site.
Step 4: [Important!!!] Save the file as a different name than the default. The .txt. file should be named something else besides dxdiag.txt
Failure in changing the name will result in an error on the website. This is where I ran into trouble, and was getting completely frustrated.
For whatever reason, the initial dxdiag.txt file name does not work on the Beta signup. Perhaps the servers want a unique name each time someone signs up for Beta. I just saved it as something like name_dxdiag.txt
Maybe they’ll fix this in the future, and you can just upload the standard dxdiag.txt file, but as of right now you have to change the name of it.
Step 5: Save to it to a location you can easily locate for uploading. I just threw mine up on the desktop for quick search.
Step 6: Finish up your Beta sign up. Upload the File you just saved.
Step 7: Cross your fingers and hope to get in!
I hope this helps at least one person out there; even if you are not trying to get into the SimCity Beta and just need to get a dxdiag file going.
