Ouya, the console built on android, has received a ton of press lately. As you can see from their Kickstarter page, they have received a ton of support from those willing to give a new console a chance. However, many of us were waiting to see what big name titles would actually come to the Ouya. Initially they only were asking for $950,000 (still a high number for Kickstarter) and to date have reach over $5.8 million in fan support.

So I guess it was only a matter of time before a big developer and publisher took notice.

Final Fantasy III, (not to be confused with the official Final Fantasy VI that use to be  called Final Fantasy III when it first released for SNES in North America) will be a launch title for the Ouya.

Here is an update from the official Ouya page, written by the head of the Ouya project:

We’ve been saying that OUYA will offer all kinds of games.

This morning, we are honored to announce that OUYA is partnering with Square Enix to bring you one of the most beloved franchises in gaming — Final Fantasy. We will kick this off with Final Fantasy III, which will be a launch title on OUYA. This will be the first time gamers outside of Japan can play FFIII on their televisions through a console.

But that’s not the end of it: We’re promising to deliver Final Fantasy III like you’ve never seen it before – Hironobu Sakaguchi’s third installment in the role playing game franchise will be updated to exploit OUYA’s high-definition resolution in glorious graphic detail. For those of you who are new to Final Fantasy, we’ll offer a free demo so you can give it a go!

Previously unreleased in the U.S. until it appeared as a 3D remake for the Nintendo DS in 2006, Final Fantasy III was widely referred to as one of the “missing pieces” in the FF series. OUYA players can now proudly claim this piece of the puzzle.

We’re thrilled to bring this storied franchise to OUYA.

This title alone could get others to jump on the bandwagon. As many may be hesitant to put their titles on a new console, seeing support from Square-Enix could get others inspired to put their feet in the water. So what title is next? If support continues by developers and publishers, this console may be a must have. It’s one thing to have fan support, but its the games that will make this console shine.

And if you know nothing about Final Fantasy III, it was the first Final Fantasy title to be a one million seller back in 1990.  A remake in 3D was made in 2006.

However, at the same time one can wonder if this is really a big risk on Square-Enix’s part.  For one, this title already has reached good sales in the original release, and during the remake.  Secondly, this title is for multiple platforms already.  It doesn’t need to do well, because Square already knows this title does fine on its own.

Though this is great news for the Ouya in general, I still wonder what big titles will come to it, depending on that console alone.  Will the Ouya receive exclusives from big names?  It really isn’t needed necessarily to make the Ouya a success, since there are a lot of great indie companies out there.  At the same time, who will take a full blown chance on them, without regurgitating old titles?

Even so, I think Square putting Final Fantasy III on the Ouya may be the first step needed to entice others to follow suit.
