It isn’t always common for a Kickstarter, or any crowd funding project to fulfill it’s funding goal in such a short amount of time. For one, a lot of projects do not get funded to begin with. But reaching its $80,000 goal in 5 hours, it is simply amazing to have a project explode in popularity so quickly.

What is Castle Story?

Castle Story is a strategy game, where players controls little characters called Bricktrons. The Bricktrons then build your castle, one block at a time, using pathfinding AI. The entire world is said to follow the rules of physics, and allow you to be creative with your building.

Their first demonstration video of Castle Story was uploaded on December 24th, 2011 so it is quite obvious that they have been working on this for some time at least.

According to their Kickstarter page, the team states:

“We’ve been working on Castle Story in our free time ever since we graduated from game design studies two years ago.”

Below is their most recent demonstration video of their progress:

Castle Story is one Kickstarter you can already see the promise in. While so many seem to only be in the beginning stages, Castle Story is well in development, which could very well be the reason for its overwhelming amount of backers at such an early stage.

The concept of this game caught my interest almost immediately when I saw how the little Bricktons would carry off a block, and you as the player had a full choice as to where to drop it. Being able to build the castle of your dreams with little yellow minions just seems like an addiction waiting to happen! Even though they are cute and cartoonish, the Bricktons will also defend your castle against creatures that come to attack.

The rewards are very nice on the Kickstarter page, but I paid very little attention to that as the concept is stand alone. I can only wonder and hope what kind of castles I will one day be able to make on Castle Story.

The plan is to also include multiplayer, but the concept and controls will take the team some time to get it polished.

The little game company working on Castle Story is Sauropod Studio, based in Montréal, Canada. It is a small, three man team that only have a few of outside help working on other aspects of the game.

Castle Story is a game that one should keep an eye out for. If you are not into Kickstarter, and want to wait for the official release, it will be available on Mac and PC.  If you cannot wait, there is an option on the Kickstarter page that will allow you to play the prototype and Beta version of the game soon.  There is no plans for it to be put on any tablet device or the Ouya.
